American Expert Discusses Preserving Iraqi Cultural Heritage
March 22, 2007 Corine Wegener, former Major in the U.S. Army Reserve and art curator, gave a series of lectures in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden and The Hague, co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, on the looting of the Iraq Museum and cultural property at war. She talked about her experiences in Baghdad in 2003, when she assisted the National Museum of Iraq in tracing back and safeguarding looted art from the museum. After her return to U.S. she founded the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, which is part of an international organization that promotes the protection of cultural property during armed conflict and emergency response when needed.
